It 100% fits with the Marvel Studios Universe established in Iron Man 1 and 2, Incredible Hulk, and Thor but feels more like Indiana Jones and the original Star Wars trilogy in tone and style. The film is set mostly in the 1940′s but has very sci-fi elements thanks to the “Magic Tech” originally explained in this summer’s Thor movie also from Marvel Studios.

THE ACTING: Chris Evans is great as Steve Rogers/Captain America. He brings compassion and thoughtfulness to the role, showing lots with his face and body language. Evans also handles action quite well, also displayed by his previous movie roles. He displays natural charisma and leadership qualities as the good Captain. The various supporting roles were well acted and believable, from the Howling Commandos to Peggy, Bucky and Arnim Zola. I hope we see Zola again sometime is his bizarre Marvel-Comics look. Howard Stark is totally believable as Tony Stark’s Dad.

I actually thought the weakest link was Red Skull, which I personally wasn’t expecting. Hugo Weaving was decent as always, but didn’t really get all that much to do. He was more interesting in the film when he looks “normal”. I think buried under the Skull makeup some of his acting nuances got lost. Unfortunately, the makeup is probably the most out of place thing in this movie. It’s so bright and colorful in an otherwise fairly muted color scheme. I hate to say that, because it’s so SPOT ON to his comics appearance.

THE EFFECTS: Lots of CGI – as is expected. It is a standard in modern movies, and here it’s very good! There were a couple shots where I lament the loss of traditional stunt work, but that’s more of a personal hang-up. Steve at the beginning where he looks like a 90 pound asthmatic is quite stunning.

THE DIRECTION: Joe Johnston worked as the art director on Raiders of the Lost Ark, and this movie feels like it inhabits the same world Dr. Henry Jones does. It’s no doubt intentional, and there are even a couple nods to Indy in there. Johnston handles both the action and the drama deftly and the movie clips along at a brisk pace pausing briefly from the action from time to time to reflect on events or for humor. This movie is infused with a sense of fun that modern audiences aren’t used to. I heard lots of people in the theater snickering at the wrong times, mostly around the Hydra/Red Skull scenes. Captain America isn’t jaded and he has no “personal demons”, just a sense to want to do what is right and to be the best person he can be whenever possible. It’s extremely refreshing to see a superhero movie where the “super” is actually a “hero”.

Oh, and Cap’s shield! He gets to use it and HOW! It’s great to see on the big screen bouncing around knocking over HYDRA goons.

CAN KIDS SEE IT? I don’t know about all children, but my kids seeing this are going to be as blown away as I was seeing “Raiders of the Lost Ark” for the first time as a kid. It really feels like an 80′s Spielberg/Lucas flick, with the “best parts” from other movies staged one after another. There is plenty of sci-fi action violence, mostly bloodless. There is light cursing, like “Hell” and “Ass”. No sex or nudity to speak of, besides some cloy dialogue that’s very 1940′s and some brief kissing. Red Skull may be frightening to little kids, but I kind of doubt it.

More importantly, it shows Captain America/Steve Rogers as a leader with strong ties of friendship, loyalty, honor, and self sacrifice. He does what he does to help and save people, and can put his ego in check when needed. This is the type of hero I want my kids to emulate. I consider it counter programming to the disturbing selfish behavior of Hal Jordan in WB’s Green Lantern movie.

AFTER CREDITS SCENE? Of course stay after the credits. AMAZING Avengers teaser at the end. I have goosebumps. Going to see this again this weekend with my boys in tow.

Spy Report from the London Set of “The Dark Knight Rises”!

Comic Books

Movies

Random NEWS of some sort

Batman

Comics

DC Comics

movies
<guid

Here are his words, and there are potential spoilers, so be ye warned!

Our first shot involved the lot of us (about 80 in all) performing a raid on Bane’s base which is located in the sewers of Gotham. The raid turns out to be a trap and a bomb is set off trapping all (or a large portion) of the G.C.P.D. underground for a long period of time, it wasnt made clear how long one AD said three months which sounds nuts another said a few weeks but this led to our second set up…

After lunch we were all dirtied up and set up around Bane’s hideout, the police have basically set up a shanty town using the supplies that Bane and his crew left. First they shot a few general shots to set up all of us dirty and sitting around depressed then we shot a scene with one of the actors telling us that they got word from JGL’s character Blake that it was time to move and that we were getting out.

So basically Bane has henchmen and they trap the cops in the sewer throwing the whole city into chaos. I would assume Bat’s saves the day and thus RISES but that last bits a guess.

Also talked to an extra that did some work earlier in the shoot and shot an a scene involving Blake meeting Anna Hathaway after she kicks the crap out of some guys in a bar.

Also while inside the hanger I saw the exterior of Arkham which may have just been in storage but I’d assume is to be used again. Overall again an amazing day.

Sounds pretty cool! I think Bane is a great villain and I can’t wait to see him get a decent on-screen treatment. It sounds like he just as every bit of the plotter and planner that I enjoyed about him in his early comics appearances, and not just a thuggish brute.

6 inch Movie Captain America And Movie Nick Fury! The studio commissioned Marvel cover artist Paolo Rivera for the cool ass poster seen above as… wait for it… keep waiting… almost there… getting tired of this over long gag yet? …well I’m not… and it was commission as a GIFT to cast and crew of the movie. Only ONE HUNDRED WERE MADE, five of which will be up as a contest prize at something called the ‘Hero Complex Film Festival.’ Yeah, in a rare moment of ‘hey let’s not do something insipid’ Hollywood still manages to cock it all up (no I don’t know why I’m busting out English slang today either) I mean is the Captain America production team Mattel? Since they’re the only group I’ve ever seen to screw up like this.

Here we have a cool poster that would’ve drawn attention to it- not like those lame photoshop deals that always make people shrug and go ‘oh movie X is coming out soon’ but an actual piece of ART- something that likely would’ve lived on as a popular poster for college kids and whatnot (hell how many long forgotten movies have cool posters that still hang on peoples walls?) But no- we don’t get this- hell from what I see the entire crew of Cap doesn’t even get one (only 95 for them? I know more people work on a movie- poor caterer) and now only five people get one out here.

So please right click save the pic at the top.

New Captain America and Red Skull Image from the Latest TV spot!

Comic Books

Movies

Random NEWS of some sort

Captain America

Captain America: The First Avenger

Comics

Marvel

Marvel Studios

movies

Red Skull
<guid

Evidently they feel it’s time to make these guys relevant again or some such nonsense. The first title is Justice League #1 by Geoff Johns and Jim Lee- which means it’ll take about 17 years for 6 issues to be released. Now I have no idea if these are replacing the old titles or are instead DC’s second attempt at a ‘Ultimate’ style situation- either way it just drives home why I gave up on comics in the first place- well super-hero titles mainly.

not accoring do geoff johns you're not

I mean right now how many storylines are running in the DCU? Hell I know Green Lantern has that whole ‘War of the Green Lanterns’ fiasco and lord knows there must be something else out there. My point is well why even bother fininshing it if next month everything is back to square one? Now I understand you occasionally have to flush the damn toilet but how many times has DC revamped their universe? In the 21th century alone? It’s simply getting ridiculous and goes to show you how bad the creative teams have been if they feel a need to constantly revamp them. Incidentally it’s been pretty much the same crowd over there since about say ’03 so I imagine there will be yet another upheaval shortly after this one.

<img
